11/14/2016 0 Comments Kids' HourToday Naja and Valdemar brainstormed a list of activities for the YMCA kids during the kids' hour. They had to take wind and the fact that kids like throwing things into consideration. They came up with some arts and crafts that could be done outside, like playing with play dough or painting plates. They came up with games the kids could play like mancala or giant jenga. There's also competitions based on the holidays like a ginger bread house making competition.
11/10/2016 0 Comments Shade that is not PermanentToday we solved (we hope) the shade issue. By putting PVC pipe in a bucket of liquid concrete while it drys, it will make the PVC stand up straight. If we put buckets of liquid concrete with PVC pipe stuck inside on the corners of the fair, then attached a tarp or canvas to the top of the PVC pipes, there would be shade over the seating area.
11/9/2016 0 Comments Meeting with MaritzaToday we had a meeting with Ms. Maritza, and we talked about the ideas we had come up with, as well as some plans she had. We were able to clear up some confusion on the surveys we had conducted, but we also learned that we need to restructure a question or two in order to get the proper information she was looking for. For the mural, the kids won't be painting tiles, but a freestanding wall that will be painted over every week by local artists or taggers. She also thought our idea to get the YMCA involved was great, but she thinks before contacting them, we should have a plan of how we want that time with the children to go. Maritza thought getting games, balls, and arts and crafts for the kids was also good, but she said they would have to be kid proof and wind proof. There is also the issue of shade over the seating area of the fair space. Maritza told us people keep expressing a need for shade, but the problem is, they can't make anything permanent in the lot space. She asked us to think about a way to make shade, but not making it permanent. The last thing we discussed was healthy eating. The community wants more healthy eating, especially for kids, so she wanted us to look into getting healthy vendors and ingredients for vendors that we could introduce to the fair space.
11/2/2016 0 Comments Fair At 44 VisitToday we went to the fair to help set up, and see what else we could do while we were there. We swept up hay, hung up vendors´ signs, made a sign for a new vendor, and surveyed people about how to improve the fair.
We use the data from the surveys to figure out what to bring to the fair to make it more successful. The ideas we have so far are kids' activities (board games, toys, arts and crafts) a photo booth, a Snapchat geo tag, and a mural with tiles that will be painted by both local adults and children. Our goal is for them to incorporate their cultures in the tiles they paint, and for all the different cultures to come together to paint one large mural. |
